캐나다 토론토 피플스 교회 오스왈드 스미스(Oswald Smith) 목사님은 전 세계에서 선교를 가장 많이 하신 분입니다. 그는 국내에도 할 일이 많은데 왜 굳이 해외에 나가서 선교를 하느냐는 질문에 이렇게 말했습니다. “왜 데이비드 리빙스턴이 스코틀랜드에도 할 일이 많은데 스코틀랜드를 떠나 아프리카로 갔습니까? 왜 저드슨이 미국에도 할 일이 많은데 미국을 떠나 미얀마로 갔습니까? 왜 사도 바울이 팔레스타인에도 복음을 더 전해야 하는데, 유럽으로 갔습니까? 세계가 밭이기 때문입니다. 농부가 자기 밭에서 일할 때 작은 구석에서만 일하고 나머지 밭은 내버려 둡니까? 농부는 자기 밭 전체에서 일합니다. 미국은 밭의 작은 구석입니다. 세계라는 넓은 밭 전체로 나가서 일해야 합니다.” 오스왈드 스미스 목사님의 말씀에 의하면 미국도 세계라는 밭의 작은 구석일 뿐입니다. 우리는 세계라는 넓은 밭으로 나가 복음을 전해야 합니다.

  Reverend Oswald Smith of People’s Church in Toronto, Canada has made mission trips to all over the world more than any other person. To being asked, “Isn’t there much to do here? Why go to missions abroad?” he answered, “Why do you think David Livingstone left Scotland to go to Africa when he had much to do at home?” Why did Judson leave America to go to Myanmar when there was much to do at home? Why did the apostle Paul go to Europe when he had people to evangelize in Palestine? Because the world is the field. Does a farmer only till a corner of the field and neglect the rest? No, the farmer works the entire field. America is a small part of the field. We must go to the bigger parts of the field to do work.” According to the reverend, America, the nation, is but a small part of the whole field. We must venture out to the rest of the world to spread the Gospel.

  전도와 선교의 공통점을 둘 다 복음을 전하는 것입니다. 그러면 둘 사이의 차이점은 무엇일까요? 전도는 같은 문화권에서 복음을 전하는 것이고 선교는 타 문화권에 가서 복음을 전하는 것입니다. 그러면 전도와 선교 중 무엇이 더 효과적일까요? 전도가 훨씬 효과적입니다. 어떤 사람은 국내보다 해외에서 복음을 잘 전할 수 있어서 선교사가 된다고 말합니다. 그러나 실상은 국내에서 복음을 더 잘 전할 수 있습니다. 일단 언어도 같고 문화도 같기 때문입니다. 생각하는 것, 사는 방식이 비슷합니다. 그래서 전도가 선교보다 훨씬 더 효과적입니다. 그런데도 선교를 해야 하는 이유가 있습니다. 예수님이 “너희는 온 천하에 다니며 만민에게 복음을 전파하라”(막 16:15)라고 명령하셨기 때문입니다. 그러므로 선교는 우리에게 선택이 아닌 필수입니다.

  The common thing about missions and evangelism is the sharing of the Gospel. Then what is the difference? Evangelism takes place under the umbrella of shared culture while missions involves a different culture. Then which of the two is more effective? Evangelism surely. Some say that they choose to be a missionary abroad because sharing the Gospel comes more easily in international settings than within the one’s borders. But the opposite is in fact true. First, there is the benefit of shared language and culture. There is commonality of thought and life style. So then, evangelism is more effective than missions. And yet, we must still do the works of missions because Jesus commanded us, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15; NIV). Thus, missions is not an option but a requirement.

 

  우리는 같은 민족에게 복음을 더 잘 전할 수 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 언어와 문화의 장벽을 뛰어넘어 선교해야 하는 이유가 있습니다. 모든 민족이 복음을 들어야 예수님이 오시기 때문입니다. “이 천국 복음이 모든 족속 가운데 증언되기 위하여 온 세상에 전파되리니 그제야 끝이 오리라”(마 24:14) 우리가 하루에 1,000명씩 이곳에서 복음을 전해도 우리 생애 가운데 예수님의 재림은 일어나지 않습니다. 미국에 사는 사람들 모두가 예수님을 믿어도 예수님의 재림은 일어나지 않습니다. 예수님의 재림은 모든 민족 가운데 복음이 증언되어야 일어납니다. 따라서 전도가 훨씬 효과적이지만 선교는 반드시 해야 하는 필수입니다. 복음을 한 번도 들어보지 못한 민족을 대상으로 선교해야, 그다음에 그 민족 가운데 전도가 일어나 그 민족이 복음화될 수 있기 때문입니다. 전하는 사람이 없이 복음을 들을 수 없습니다.

  It is much easier to evangelize someone of your own ethnicity. And yet, we have a reason to move beyond the barriers of language and culture for the Gospel. Because this is how Jesus will return: once all peoples hear the Gospel. Jesus said, “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matt. 24:14; NIV). The Second Coming will not come even as we evangelize a thousand souls here every day. Even if every person in the United States would convert, Jesus will not come back. He will only do so when all the nations hear the Gospel. And so, even though evangelism may seem more effective, in reality, missions is the ultimate requirement. Only by testifying the Gospel to the people who have never heard it before, they can be truly evangelized and the Gospel spread among them. Without someone to go testify, they cannot hear it.

 

  선교는 기독교의 필수사항입니다. “온 천하에 다니며 만민에게 복음을 전하라”는 예수님의 명령에 순종한다면, 선교에 예외가 있는 교회나 성도는 없습니다. 우리는 보내든지 가든지 한 부분을 담당해야 합니다. 우리는 복음을 전하기 위해 존재합니다. 물이 바다를 덮음같이 여호와의 영광이 온 세상에 가득한 날을 소망하며 복음을 전하는 일에 더욱 힘쓰기를 바랍니다. 복음을 전하는 것은 어떤 경우이든 희생과 헌신이 요구됩니다. 희생과 헌신의 토양 위에 복음은 꽃이 피고 열매를 맺습니다. 오늘은 세계 선교를 위한 헌신 주일입니다. 선교적 부르심에 적극적으로 동참하심으로 우리 교회가 복음을 전하는 사명을 잘 감당하는 교회와 성도들이 되기를 축복합니다.

  Missions is a requirement of Christianity. If we are to be faithful to Jesus’ command, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation,” no believer or church is exempt. We must only choose either to go or send. We exist to do missions. May you strive in the works of missions, desiring the day when the glory of Jehovah covers the earth as the water covers the sea. Missions calls for sacrifice and commitment in all circumstance. The Gospel is sown in the seedbed of such things and blossoms. Today is the Lord’s Day when we especially commit to this good work. I pray you would partake heartily in the calling of missions and our church take up faithfully the work of spreading the Gospel.
