중동에서 전쟁이 일어나 팔레스타인 땅이 고통하며 절규하고 있습니다. 압제 당하던 팔레스타인 사람들이 이스라엘에게 큰 충격을 안겨주었습니다. 이에 이스라엘이 피비린내 나는 복수극을 펼치고 있습니다. 복수는 앙갚음하고 싶은 마음입니다. 상처 받은 만큼 갚아 주고 싶은 욕망입니다. 그러나 복수는 원하는 바를 결코 얻을 수 없습니다. 복수는 가해자, 피해자 모두를 고통의 사슬에 묶어 놓습니다. 인도의 간디는 ‘만민이 눈에는 눈으로 식의 정의 원리를 따른다면 세상은 다 눈이 멀고 말 것’이라고 말했습니다. 용서는 타락한 본성을 거스르는 행동입니다. 우리의 본성은 미워하고 복수하는 것입니다. 용서는 하나님의 성품입니다. 하나님을 닮아가는 것입니다. 하나님 나라는 용서의 나라입니다. 용서만이 문제를 근본적으로 해결할 수 있습니다.
세상은 자격이 있을 때, 용서받을 수 있다고 말합니다. 그러나 용서(Forgive)라는 단어에는 그 자체로 주다(Give)라는 말이 들어 있습니다. 용서의 또 다른 말 Pardon에도 선물(Donum,라틴어)이라는 말이 들어 있습니다. 용서는 은혜처럼 무자격, 과분함, 불공평함이라는 사람들을 격분시키는 특성들이 있습니다. C. S. 루이스는 “크리스천이 된다는 것은 용서할 수 없는 죄를 용서한다는 것을 말한다. 하나님이 우리의 용서 받을 수 없는 죄를 용서하셨기 때문이다.”라고 말했습니다. 하나님의 용서를 충족히 경험한 사람은 성령의 능력으로 자신에게 상처와 고통, 아픔을 가져다준 사람을 용서할 수 있습니다. 우리는 용서하시는 아버지를 닮고 그분의 가족 같은 존재가 되도록 부름을 받은 사람들입니다. 용서할 수 없는 사람을 용서하는 사람만이 하나님 나라의 가족이요, 형제자매입니다.
용서는 타인을 위한 배려가 아닌 자신을 위하는 일입니다. 용서로 치유받는 첫 번째 사람은 용서하는 자기 자신입니다. 용서만이 타인의 불의에서 우리를 자유롭게 합니다. 진정한 용서는 포로에게 자유를 줍니다. 용서하는 사람은 자유하게 된 포로가 자신이었음을 깨닫게 됩니다. 상처를 떨쳐낼 수 있는 유일한 길은 오직 용서 뿐입니다. 용서 없이는 아무도 과거의 굴레에서 벗어날 수 없습니다. 용서는 법과 정의를 넘어서는 특별한 힘이 있습니다. 용서만이 세상을 치료하는 양약입니다. 용서보다 어려운 것이 딱 하나가 있습니다. 바로 용서하지 않는 것입니다. 회개하지 않는 자들을 용서하셨던 예수님을 본받아 용서하며 살기를 바랍니다. 용서는 믿음의 행위입니다. 남을 용서함으로서 하나님이 나보다 정의를 실현하는데 뛰어난 분임을 믿는 것입니다. 용서를 통해 복수의 권리를 거두고, 공평의 문제를 하나님께 맡기시기를 바랍니다.
용서는 우리의 본성에 어긋나는 행위입니다. 그래서 어려운 기술을 연습하는 것처럼 배우고 훈련해야 합니다. 용서는 설교하기는 쉬워도 실천하기는 어렵습니다. 하늘 아래에 용서만큼 힘들고 어려운 일은 없습니다. 그러나 하나님의 섭리를 믿는다면 우리는 용서할 수 있습니다. 용서하지 않으면 미움의 감옥에 갇힙니다. 변화의 잠재력이 완전히 차단됩니다. 예수님은 불의한 행위를 용서하려는 우리의 의지를 하나님이 용서하시는 조건으로 주기도문에 달아놓으셨습니다. 용서하지 않으면 주기도문으로 기도할 수 없습니다. 그리스도인이라고 말하기도 어렵습니다. 보복이 환영받는 세상에 용서를 선물함으로 하나님의 아들, 딸들로 살아가기를 축복합니다.
The war currently waging in Middle East is causing great pain for many lands in Palestine. Palestinians who lived under oppression shocked the Israeli by the recent attack. At this, Israel is coming back at them with a vengeance. Retaliation is the desire to pay back someone. It is a cruel longing to pay back as much as received. But retaliation/revenge can never fully have what it longs for. Revenge binds both the victim and the perpetrator. Mohatma Ghandi once said, “Should people follow the principle of ‘eye for an eye,’ the world will go blind.” On the other hand, forgiveness is unnatural to man’s fallen nature. It conforms after God. And the kingdom of God is one of forgiveness. It alone can solve the root of the problem.
The world regards that we ought to forgive those who deserve it. But in the word, “forgiveness,” we see the word “give.” The synonym “pardon,” too, contains the Latin word for gift donum. Like grace, forgiveness especially upsets those who see its recipients as undeserving. CS Lewis said, “To be a Christian you must forgive the unforgiveable for God forgave the unforgiveable in us.” Any man who has truly experienced God’s forgiveness, by the Holy Spirit’s power, forgives his enemy who wronged him, brought pain and suffering in his life. We are the children of the Father who forgives; we have been adopted to his family. He alone who forgives the unforgiveable is truly a member of God’s family.
To forgive is not a display of kindness to the recipient but toward the self. For the most immediate beneficiary of forgiveness is the self. In this sense, forgiveness that which liberates us from the evil committed by others. And true forgiveness truly liberates the prisoner. The one who forgives experiences that the one who is liberated is himself. Forgiveness is the only path to be set free from pain. Without it no one can be free from the pain of the past. It alone possesses the mysterious power beyond law and justice. It is the medicine that heals the world. The only thing more difficult than forgiveness is unforgiveness. May we learn from the example of Christ who forgave his unrepentant enemies. Forgiveness is an act of faith. It is trusting in God, who is a greater enforcer of justice than I. May you relinquish your hold on retaliation and entrust the matter of justice unto God alone.
Surely, forgiveness goes against our nature. This being so, we must be trained to do it, just as we train ourselves to learn a skill. Preaching forgiveness is easier than doing it. Fewer things are harder to accomplish than it under the sun. But if you believe in God’s sovereignty, we can do it. Failure to forgive imprisons our soul in the cell of hatred. We are locked out from the potential to change. Jesus included forgiveness of wrongdoing as a condition for being our own forgiveness in the Lord’s Prayer. Without forgiving, we cannot pray the prayer. We can hardly call ourselves Christians. May you live as sons and daughters of God who give the gift of forgiveness to this world that believes in revenge.
