아메리카 인디언들은 소년들의 용기를 훈련하는 독특한 방법을 사용한다고 합니다. 이들은 소년들에게 숲속에서 야생동물들과 함께 밤을 지내게 하면서 소년들의 담력을 키웠습니다. 시험을 받는 날 밤, 소년은 많은 무서움을 느꼈을 것 입니다. 그러나 날이 밝아오면서 그의 아버지가 가까운 나무 뒤에서 화살을 당긴 채 지키고 있었음을 깨닫게 됩니다. 아들이 다치지 않도록 아버지는 몰래 밤새껏 아들을 지키고 있었던 것입니다. 이처럼 하나님은 예수님을 통해 구원받은 우리와 늘 함께하십니다. 인생은 동행입니다. 동행은 ‘함께 걷는다.(walking with)는 뜻입니다. 함께 걷는다는 것은 ‘함께 산다.(living with)는 말이기도 합니다. 인생길에 동행하는 사람이 있다면 행복한 일입니다. 최고의 행복은 단연코 하나님과 동행하는 것입니다.
성경에는 하나님과 동행한 사람들이 많이 소개됩니다. 그중에 에녹이 있습니다. 창세기 5장 24절에 보면, “에녹이 하나님과 동행하더니 하나님이 그를 데려가시므로 세상에 있지 아니하였더라.”라고 말씀합니다. 에녹은 하나님과 동행하다가 하나님이 그를 천국으로 데려가셨습니다. 우리가 누군가와 동행을 하려면 친해져야 합니다. 친해진 뒤에야 그 사람과 동행할 수 있습니다. 친해지려면 그 사람을 자주 만나고 생각해야 합니다. 하나님과의 동행을 위해 먼저 하나님과 친해지시기를 바랍니다. 날마다 말씀과 기도로 하나님과 교제를 나누십시오. 하나님께 시선을 고정하고, 하나님을 더 많이 생각하십시오. 하나님의 말씀에 순종하며, 성령님의 인도와 지시를 받으십시오. 하나님과 동행하는 가운데 하나님이 주시는 복과 은혜를 받아 누리며 살기를 바랍니다.
에녹이 살던 시대는 죄악이 가득한 시대였습니다. 온 세상에 악이 넘쳐서 하나님의 탄식이 터져 나왔던 때였습니다. 그런 시대에 하나님의 자녀로 사는 것이 쉽지 않았을 것입니다. 에녹은 그런 상황에서 하나님과 동행하며 거룩한 삶을 살았습니다. 에녹은 세상이 너무 악해서 가족들을 데리고 속세를 떠나 산속에 들어가 은둔하지 않았습니다. 한 가정의 가장으로 아내와 자녀들을 돌보며, 일상에 충실하며 하나님과 동행하는 삶을 살았습니다. 하나님과의 동행을 위해 에녹은 많은 대가를 치렀을 것입니다. 이웃과 친구들로부터 손가락질과 따돌림을 당했을 것입니다. 수모와 조롱을 수없이 당했을 것입니다. 눈물도 많이 흘렸을 것입니다. 에녹은 그렇게 하루 이틀이 아닌 무려 삼백년을 하나님과 동행하며 살았습니다. 하나님은 에녹이 하나님과 동행하도록 위로와 격려, 힘과 능력을 아끼지 않으셨습니다.
경찰과 동행하면서 도둑질할 수는 없습니다. 마찬가지로 하나님과 동행하면서 죄를 지을 수는 없습니다. 죄를 짓는 것은 하나님과 동행하지 않는다는 증거입니다. 신앙생활은 하나님과의 동행하는 여정입니다. 하나님과 동행하면 삶의 여러 부분에 변화가 일어납니다. 매사를 말씀대로 살기 위해 애씁니다. 죄를 멀리하고 성결한 삶을 삽니다. 이웃을 섬기며 수고를 아끼지 않습니다. 무엇보다 능력 있는 삶을 살며, 복음의 증인으로 살아갑니다. 하나님과 동행하는 삶의 결론은 해피 엔딩입니다. 에녹이 하나님과 동행하던 어느 날, 하나님이 에녹을 천국으로 옮기셨습니다. 우리도 에녹처럼 천국으로 옮겨질 날이 있습니다. 그날을 소망하며 날마다 하나님과 동행하는 가운데 맡겨진 사명을 잘 감당하다가 마침내 천국으로 인도함 받기를 축복합니다.
The Native inhabitants of America trained their young boys for courage in a special way. They made them sleep next to wild animals in the woods at night to strengthen their tolerance of fear. The boys must have had to endure great terror on the eve of testing. But as the day broke, a realization came that their fathers were actually standing watch over them, hidden behind the trees with their bows bent. They were making sure that their boys would not come to harm. In the same way, God is always with us through Jesus for us whom he saved. Life is but a walk. Walking with someone, that is. Walking thus means living with someone also. When you have someone to walk with and alongside, you are blessed. The greatest happiness is undoubtedly walking with God.
The Bible introduces us with many people who walked with God. One of them was Enoch. Genesis 5:24 says, “Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.” Enoch walked with God and God took him to Heaven. In order for us to walk with someone we must first be acquainted with that person. Only then you may walk with him. To be acquainted, you must think of him and associate with him often. To walk with God, likewise, I pray you will befriend him. Befriend him through praying and reading his word daily. Fix your eyes on him and think of him more frequently. Obey his word and his instructions through the Holy Spirit. I hope you will experience the many blessings from him as you learn to walk with him.
The days of Enoch were one of sinfulness. The whole world was full of sin so much so that God sighed deeply. It must have been very difficult for a man like Enoch to live in that world. Enoch, however, walked with God and lived righteously. He did not turn his back on the world and take up a life of a hermit with his family. Instead, as the man of his household, he looked after his wife and his children, faithfully fulfilled his duties, and walked with God. This cost Enoch a great deal. He must have been ostracized by his neighbors and his friends. He must have endured the mockeries from them, must have swallowed many a tears. Enoch lived through these turmoil, not for a day or two, but for three hundred years! During that time, God was with Enoch, pouring over him comfort, encouragement, and strength.
No one can lead a life of crime while walking with a police officer. Likewise, we simply cannot lead a life of sin while walking with God. For sinfulness is proof you are not walking with him. Life of faith is a life of walking with God. That walk naturally impacts various aspects of life. A man who walks with God directs all that he does in the direction of God’s word. He strives to shun sin and embraces life of purity. He never tires of serving his neighbor. Above all, he leads a powerful life, living as a witness of the Gospel. At the end, a happy ending awaits him who walks with God. One day, God visited Enoch who had been faithfully walking with him and God took him to Heaven. We, too, like Enoch, will one day be moved to Heaven. I pray we will all fix our hope on that day and walk daily with God, fulfilling our responsibilities, and finally be led into the Celestial City.
