필립 얀시의 책 중에 “교회, 나의 고민 나의 사랑”이라는 책이 있습니다. 이 책에서 그는 “왜 교회여야만 할까?”라는 질문을 던집니다. 그는 어린 시절 율법주의로 엄격한 미국 남부의 근본주의 교회를 다녔습니다. 행동을 통제하고 전통에 묶여있던 신앙생활은 그의 믿음 성장을 방해했습니다. 그에게 교회는 위선적이고 형식에 몰두해 있는 것처럼 보였습니다. 그는 많은 교회에 다녀 보았지만 자신의 이상에 맞는 곳은 없었다고 말했습니다. 그렇다고 그가 교회를 떠난 것은 아닙니다. 평생의 고민을 통해, 다시 교회를 붙잡을 수밖에 없었다고 말합니다. 그는 가정이 불완전하다고 해서 가족 제도를 버릴 수 없는 것처럼, 교회를 버릴 수는 없다고 말합니다. 가족을 통해 생명이 태어나고 성장하듯, 교회를 통해 그리스도인이 잉태됩니다. 교회는 불완전하지만, 어두운 세상을 향한 하나님의 한결같은 대안입니다.
우리 교회가 설립 14주년을 맞았습니다. 삐걱거리고 흔들렸지만 항해를 계속해서 여기까지 이르게 하신 에벤에셀의 하나님께 찬송과 영광을 올려드립니다. 돌아보니 모든 것이 그저 감사할 따름입니다. 먼저 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 부어주신 하나님께 감사를 드립니다. 교회를 위해 물심양면으로 수고와 헌신을 아끼지 않으신 성도님들께도 감사를 드립니다. 보이지 않는 곳에서 이름도 없이 빛도 없이 섬겨주신 성도님들의 희생으로 우리 교회가 든든히 세워져가고 있음에 감사를 드립니다. 교회를 시작하면서 우리가 가졌던 소원들이 하나씩 이루어지고 있음에 감사를 드립니다. 우리 교회가 시간이 가면 갈수록 하나님의 기쁨, 세상의 기쁨, 성도의 기쁨이 되는 교회가 되기를 기원합니다. 하나님의 마음을 시원케 하며, 세상에서 칭찬을 듣고, 성도의 신앙생활 방황에 종지부를 찍는 교회가 되기를 소망합니다.
시간이 어느 정도 지나면서 우리 교회는 제법 교회다운 면모를 갖추었습니다. 주변에 어느 정도 이름도 알려졌습니다. 그러나 이런 것들이 주님이 기뻐하시는 건강한 교회의 모습은 아닙니다. 오히려 이런 것들은 하나님과 우리 사이의 바른 관계를 가로막는 걸림돌이 될 수 있습니다. 하나님이 기뻐하시는 교회는 겉으로 드러난 외형적인 모습이 아닙니다. 하나님은 교회의 주체인 성도 한 사람 한 사람이 예수님의 마음을 품고, 예수님을 더욱 닮아가기를 원하십니다. 우리 교회와 성도님 모두가 성숙한 나이에 걸맞게 예수님을 중심에 모시고, 거룩한 성전을 아름답게 가꾸어 가기를 소원합니다. 하나님의 마음을 시원케 하며, 이 땅에 하나님 나라를 이루어가는 일에 우리 모두가 지속적으로 쓰임받기를 소망합니다.
교회는 어두운 세상의 희망입니다. 하나님은 교회를 통해 세상을 구원하십니다. 비록 교회가 실망스러운 때도 있고 부족한 모습을 보여줄 때도 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 교회는 예수님이 자신의 몸으로 이 땅에 남겨놓으신 하나님의 방편입니다. 교회가 이 세상을 향한 하나님의 기대이며 희망임을 잊지 말기를 바랍니다. 교회는 어두운 세상에 희망을 빛을 비추는 등대와 같습니다. 교회가 살면 가정이 살고, 민족이 살고, 세상이 삽니다. 우리 교회가 세상의 희망이 되어 하나님을 기쁘시게 하며, 세상을 구원하고 살리는 일에 아름답게 쓰임 받기를 소원합니다. LA 기쁨의 교회를 세우시고, 지금까지 인도하신 하나님께 감사와 영광을 올려 드립니다.
Philip Yancey wrote a book, “Church, Why Bother?” In it, he asks, “Why the church?” Growing up in a fundamentalist Southern church background, Yancey lived a life where a legalistic abuse of rules and traditions stifled his spiritual growth. For him, the church represented hypocrisy and rituals. The many churches he checked out never fulfilled his ideals. But even so, he never left the church for good. Through a lifetime of struggle, he came to embrace her. Just as one could never disown his imperfect family, Yancey states that church is indispensable. The church is the conduit through which a spiritual life is born, just as a child is born through a family. No, she is never perfect, but she is the sole institution of God for this darkened world.
Our church celebrates her 14th anniversary. Through many snares and turmoil, God of Ebenezer has led her to this place—all glory and praises to Him! Looking back, I feel nothing but gratitude about everything. First of all, I give thanks to God who has been the very present help in times of need. Secondly, I thank every member who has given sacrificially and served unreservedly. It is because of their services, many of which never went noticed, that our church was able to be edified and is being edified still. I am thankful for each of the prayers that are being answered since the church was planted. I sincerely hope that our church will continue to become the joy of God, of the world, and of the saints, offering delight to God, being praised by men, and leading the wanderers out of their wandering.
Over the decade, our church grew into being more of an establishment in that it began to be better known in the neighborhood. Not that this on its own is the model God desires of His bride. Rather, being known can become a stumbling block in our relationship with God. The church which God delights in is not a church that looks good on the outside. What God wants is a church whose members that comprise it, each conform to the heart of Jesus and take on after Him. May the Church of Joy become, as is fitting for its age, the church that has Jesus at its heart and continue to be built into the beautiful temple. May we bring joy to God and ever be used to bring his Kingdom on earth.
The Church is the hope of this dark world. God uses the Church to save this world. Though the Church has her embarrassments and blemishes, she remains the body of Christ on this earth, God’s own plan of redemption. I pray we will never forget that the Church is God’s desire of salvation and hope for the world. The Church is like a beacon that shines upon the black sea. When she thrives, families come to life. When she thrives, peoples live, nations live. May our church be used to offer hope to this world, bring joy to God, and save people. All praises to God who plants and leads the Church of Joy!
