9월 4일은 Labor Day, 노동절입니다. 노동절은 노동자를 위로하기 위해 제정된 날입니다. 세계 많은 나라의 노동절은 5월에 있습니다. 그런데 미국은 9월에 노동절이 있습니다. 사실 요즈음은 노동 관련 법이나 노동조합 등으로 인해 노동자의 대우나 근로 조건이 아주 좋아졌습니다. 그래서인지 노동절에 노동자들을 위한 행사는 거의 없습니다. 대신 여름 휴가철을 끝내면서 들떴던 마음을 추스르며 재충전하는 날로 활용합니다. 가족들이 모여 피크닉과 바비큐를 즐기고, 한 해의 마지막 연휴로 여행을 다녀오기도 합니다. 노동절은 개학의 시작을 알리기도 합니다. 많은 학교가 노동절 전후로 개학합니다. 노동절은 우리가 하는 일의 의미와 가치를 되새겨보는 날입니다. 우리는 일 때문에 고통을 당하기도 하지만 일로 인해 삶의 가치와 행복을 누립니다. 일은 우리의 행복을 이루는 데 있어 필수적인 요소입니다.
성경은 일을 신성하게 여깁니다. 하나님이 세상을 창조하시고 우리에게 일을 주셨습니다. 하나님은 “생육하고 번성하여 땅에 충만하라 땅을 정복하라 바다의 물고기와 하늘의 새와 땅에 움직이는 모든 생물을 다스리라.”(창 1:28)라고 하셨습니다. 일하지 않고는 땅에 충만할 수 없고, 세상을 정복할 수 없으며, 하나님의 복을 누릴 수 없습니다. 우리는 하나님의 청지기가 되어 일을 통해 이 땅에 하나님 나라를 건설합니다. 바울은 “누구든지 일하기 싫어하거든 먹지도 말게 하라”(살후 3:10)라고 권면했습니다. 우리는 일을 통해 우리의 필요를 채웁니다. 일을 통해 다른 사람을 사랑하고 섬깁니다. 일을 통해 하나님과의 동역을 이루게 됩니다. 일은 하나님에 의해 어떤 사람이 되라고 부름을 받은 우리의 소명이며 인생의 목적을 이루는 수단입니다.
일은 하나님이 우리에게 맡겨주신 것이요 세상에서 하나님의 영광을 드러내는 도구입니다. 우리에게 주어진 일에 최선을 다해야 하는 이유는 하나님이 일을 맡겨주셨기 때문입니다. 그리스도인의 일에 대한 철학은 분명합니다. 무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 않는 것입니다. 우리에게 맡겨진 일이 무엇이든지 하나님이 맡기셨음을 믿고, 최선으로 감당하시기를 바랍니다. 하나님은 하찮게 여겨지는 일이라도 소중히 여기며 최선을 다하는 사람을 기뻐하십니다. 일을 기도하듯 거룩하고 정성스럽게 하시길 바랍니다. 마음을 다하여 하나님을 섬기듯 주어진 일을 감당할 때, 하나님이 더 크고 소중한 일을 맡기십니다. 우리에게 주어진 일을 통해 주인 되신 하나님께 영광을 돌리기를 소원합니다.
하나님은 우리를 일하며 살도록 부르셨습니다. 예수님은 "내 아버지께서 이제까지 일하시니 나도 일한다."(요 5:17)라고 하셨습니다. 하나님도 일하시고, 예수님도 일하십니다. 예수님은 이 세상에 오셔서 목수로 일하셨고, 공생애를 시작하신 후에도 쉬지 않고 일하셨습니다. 일을 할 수 있다는 것은 축복이며 기쁨입니다. 일은 절대 피해야 할 기피 대상이나 골칫거리가 아닙니다. 예수님은 일할 수 없는 때가 온다고 하셨습니다. 일하고 싶다고 언제든지 일할 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. 일할 수 없는 날이 속히 옵니다. 일할 수 있는 동안, 우리에게 주어진 일을 최선으로 감당함으로 삶의 보람을 누리시길 바랍니다. 일은 하나님의 선물입니다. 하나님의 소명을 이루는 터전입니다. 일을 통해 하나님의 소명을 이루고, 생의 행복과 기쁨을 만끽하시기를 축복합니다.
September 4th marks the Labord Day in America. Labor Day is the day instituted to console the workers. For many of the countries, this day falls sometime in May, but the US has it in September. To be frank, in recent years, laws and unions that oversee workers and their working conditions have improved quite a lot. Perhaps that is why there are so few holidays or events for workers during this season. Instead, Labor Day is used as an adjusting period after summer vacations end and people transition themselves back to their lives. Some enjoy picnics or barbeques while others spend the day as the last vacation day and travel. Labor Day also signifies the beginning of an academic year as many schools reopen after the day. This day helps us look back on the significance of our work. We are often distressed by the workload but also experience joy and value of life through it. Work is essential for our happiness.
Scripture regards work as sacred. After creation of the world, God gave mankind work. He said, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground” (Gen. 1:28 NIV). Without work, mankind would not fill the earth, rule over creatures, nor receive God’s blessings. We are God’s stewards who establish his kingdom through our work. Paul exhorted, “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat” (2 Thess. 3:10). Work meets our needs. Work drives us to serve and love others. Through it, we accomplish God’s purposes as his coworkers. Work is God’s institute which calls us to be a certain someone in life. It is what gets us to that purpose.
Work is a God-given agent that brings glory to him in the world. The reason why we must fulfill our duties the best we can is because God gave us those duties. For the Christian, ethics of work is never a mystery. It is to do all things, whatever they may be, as if unto the Lord and not unto people. I pray that you would do your work with excellence, trusting that God has tasked you for it. God is pleased with the one who does his/her best even when it comes to a miniscule, trivial task. May you attend to your work as you would prayer, with reverence and care. God grants us with greater things when we work hard with all our hearts. May you bring honor to God by your hard work.
God has called us to be workers. Jesus said, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working” (John 5:17). God the Father works; so does Jesus. As a man, Jesus worked as a carpenter on earth, and even when he began his ministry, he never rested from working. To be able to work is a blessing and a joy. It is not an object of disdain, a thing to be avoided. Jesus warned his disciples that a time will come when no one can work. Not everyone can work if they wished. The time such as Jesus said will come soon. This means that when we have the time, we ought to work to the best of our abilities and reap the satisfaction from it in our lives—that is my prayer for you. Work is a gift from God to humanity. It is the field upon where God’s calling for us is realized. May you realize that calling and experience the fullness of happiness and joy.
