A young man approached me one day and asked if it would be a
good idea for him to date someone. I told him that he should look for a woman
who speaks well and speaks positive words. If you plan on living together with
someone for the rest of your life, it would be wise that person be respectful
with his/her words, and empathize with his/her words. We come across people who
may be fine in their appearances but are crass with their words. Conversely,
there are those who may not look fine on the outside but stand out because of
their ways with words. What comes out of our mouths is what makes that
difference. Words have power to manipulate our hearts. Individuals are beloved
by their words that inspire us. Happy families are made of spouses that
communicate well with one another and respect one another. Our lives are
enriched by one or two words that come together.
You can tell a lot about a person by his/her words. What a man says reveals his personality and character. Words reveal more than the skill the person possesses. They say something about the whole person, because words are the housing of a soul. What a man says and how he says reveal what he is. There is no need to investigate him further because his speech reveals him. Words are like a mirror that reflects who we are. They reveal our character and our convictions. And so, it is not an overstatement to say words are the most important thing in life. The Chinese have a saying 寸鐵殺人 (cùn tiě shā rén), which literally means an inch of metal has the power to kill a man—it is used to emphasize the power in a single word. The reverse of this would be 寸鐵活人 (cùn tiě huo rén), that is, the power of a word to give life. My hope is that you will learn to speak words that go beyond the means of communicating and into being the power to bring life to others.
We believe that language is the unique gift of God who created us. Man who is made in God’s image possess the power to communicate using words; it is one of the most important abilities. I pray you will use this gift well to live a life that reflects God’s image. As believers, when we speak, we ought to be thinking whether the words I say bring glory to God. Our best words are spoken when we speak to someone as if speaking to the Lord Himself. The Apostle Peter said, “If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God” (1 Pet. 4:11 NIV). When we speak as one speaks God’s words, we honor God. And as the Psalmist pray, may the words of our mouth and the meditations of our hearts be pleasing to God. May we bring glory to God by speaking to others as we would to Christ, as if God were always watching.
God gave us the gift of speech that we may communicate. We use our words to pray, to sing praises, and to evangelize. We use words to encourage and edify the brothers. We use words for the beautification of our community. On the other hand, we employ words to hurt someone. We use words sometimes to bring down the community and make them miserable. Words are the essence that influence the wellbeing of human life. Researches from neurologists report that of the 23 billion cells in the human brain, 98% of them are affected by our words. This is the power of our words. It is not for nothing the Bible says, “Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity” (Prov. 21:23 NIV). Change your words, and you change your life. Our lives are directed by them.
I pray you will make the word a better place by your words.
