The following is an excerpt from Reverend Leighton Ford’s book “Good News is For Sharing”
The reverend and his company met with a French missionary who was stationed in South Africa.
The missionary had spent the last ten years in a Muslim inhabited region.
When asked, “How many conversions did you see in the past decade?” the missionary replied, “Two.”
To this another person asked, “Then why do you insist staying here?”
The missionary looked at the questioner as if he had asked something strange and answered, “Why stay here? Because Jesus Christ sent me here. That’s why.”
The reverend said that he had never forgotten that reply.
The French missionary saw only two people convert in the ten years he was there. But because God had sent him, he could never abandon his post. What a challenging statement!
He stayed to continue evangelizing, not because of any fruits, but simply because of God’s calling for him.
Jesus commanded us to make disciples of all nation.
To bring the Gospel to the ends of the earth is our commission.
How many have converted through us does not matter ultimately.
What matters is whether I am obeying the master’s command.
Reverend Ford said, “Evangelism is the greatest priority of our lives.”
He exhorts us to prioritize evangelism above all else in life every day.
Evangelism is indeed the most urgent command and calling for the Christian. And when evangelism takes that place in life, God responds by taking care of us with utmost attention.
Evangelism is also what pleases God the most.
Anyone who prioritizes it is already close to God’s heart. For God’s interest is with the one who evangelizes, his eyes ever upon him/her.
God also hears first the prayers of such a person.
To the one who evangelizes God bestows all authority of heaven and earth and showers blessings and graces.
When we evangelize, we are fulfilling God’s desire.
That is why the evangelist is the wisest person since it is he/she who knows what God wants most and does it with all their heart.
Evangelism is not one of many programs or agendas of a church.
It is the very reason why the church exists as it is her goal.
All of her programs and agendas, her many structures and events are and must be geared toward that goal.
Just as a compass always points to north, the church’s ministries must point toward the great goal of evangelism.
Christ came on earth to evangelize. The Holy Spirit himself came to make us Christ’s witnesses.
God desires that all souls be saved by coming to know the truth.
The most important mechanism by which God’s kingdom arrives on earth is through evangelism.
And thus, there is no greater item on the church’s agenda than it.
The countdown for this year’s New Life Festival has begun.
May each of us share the Father’s heart and channel all our mind and strength toward bringing “One soul to Christ.”
May we be on the lookout for souls around us in need of salvation through Christ.
May we pray for them, serve them with the heart of God, and invite them to this wonderful event.
May this Festival be the occasion where many souls come to the Lord Jesus.
